FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCONOMOWOC, WI – July 24, 2017. The Oconomowoc Area School District announces today that Jay Benish has been named the new Head Boys Basketball coach at Oconomowoc High School. Benish, who replaces Kurt Melton in that role, will be joining Silver Lake Intermediate School as a science teacher.
Coach Benish comes to Oconomowoc after serving the last ten years as head basketball coach at Jefferson High School. Prior to his time in Jefferson, Benish served as an assistant basketball coach at Viterbo University from 2003-2007. In addition to his teaching degree from Viterbo University, where he also was a basketball standout, he holds a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from UW-Lacrosse.
“After a long and extensive search, I am extremely pleased to be welcoming Coach Benish to Oconomowoc,” stated OHS Athletic Director Kevin Flegner. “I know for everyone involved it has been a long process, but it was important to bring in a coach who checked all of the boxes that we had laid out from day one. Jay is a tireless worker whose teams are very disciplined, tough, and fundamentally sound.”
Flegner went on to add that, “Jay brings a wealth of experience as both a former player and a head coach. He comes from a basketball family, where he played high school basketball for his father who won over 200 games during his career at Wonewoc Center. Jay also was an assistant football coach at Jefferson, believes strongly in the multi-sport athlete, and he is very excited about our Oconomowoc Power summer program and being a part of that as well.”
A meet and greet for parents and players is being planned for August. More details on that event will follow.
