OCONOMOWOC — October is Breast Awareness Month and to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Oconomowoc High School's Student Council is sponsoring activities during Pink Out Week, which is this week.

The group also hopes to increase breast cancer awareness and support of people and their families affected by the disease.

Kathryn S., 17, is the vice president of this year's Student Council board and is spearheading the committee of about 30 students helping to organize the school's Pink Out campaign.

"We feel it's important to help people who are going through a tough time in our community, especially after this last year. We chose to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation because we know so many have been affected by breast cancer," she explained.

Students and staff are encouraged to wear pink to all the sporting events held at OHS this week, including the Varsity football game against Waukesha North High School at 7 p.m. Friday, at OHS Rux Stadium.

"We'll also be handing out pink ribbons to everyone in school all week and there will be special pink T-shirts for sale for $10. The shirts will also be for sale at Friday's football game," said Kathryn. "We talked to Waukesha North's student council, and they will ask their school to wear pink, so hopefully the whole football stadium will turn pink."

During halftime of Friday's game, the students will hold a "Miracle Minute" by running around the stadium with containers for donations to raise as much funds as they can in 60 seconds.

Angela Fischer is a school counselor at OHS and the co-advisor for the student-led organization.

"Student council is all about leadership and giving back to the community. There are about 150 kids participating this year, and their purpose is to plan and organize service and community events. This is really a great group effort," added Fischer.

Even the OHS athletes are supporting the cause by wearing pink shoelaces, arm bands or hair ribbons while competing in their home games this week. The community is invited to join the students in their efforts by wearing pink during the Girls Varsity volleyball game tonight at 7 p.m. and Boys Varsity football game at 7 p.m. Friday. All proceeds from the OHS Pink Out week will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. For more information about the organization, visit www.bcrf.org.

Positively pink

Oconomowoc High School Student Council members organized fundraising activities Oct. 4-8 to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research, including wearing pink to all athletic events held at the school.
